Sedan, coupe, cabriolet (convertible), and wagon are all back for 2014, with standard rear-wheel-drive and Mercedes-Benz' optional 4Matic all-wheel-drive mated to a standard seven-speed automatic transmission. A new front and rear styling with LED head- and taillamps updates the look while a luxurious interior improves the upscale feel of the E-Class. Five different engines are available, including a four-cylinder diesel, V-6, V-6 hybrid, and two V-8s. Topping the range is a new high-performance E63 AMG 4Matic sedan and wagon with standard all-wheel drive, a first for the North American market. An array of electronic safety and convenience aids are available including lane-keeping assist, collision warning, adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection with autonomous braking, active parking assist, surround-view camera and more. Exterior The swirling curvaceous shape of the previous E-Class is gone, replaced with a look that integrates the front headlamps into two units with four LED elements. Two grille treatments are available: They are the Elegance option that places the Mercedes-Benz three-pointed star logo on the hood as an ornament or the Sport option that relocates and integrates it into the car's grille. Four body styles are available, including a sedan, wagon, coupe or cabriolet (convertible). Exterior styles are fairly similar, with coupe and cabriolet receiving different lower front styling and rear taillamp treatments to differentiate them from the sedan and wagon. The prominent fender bulges on the previous model are now more integrated into the overall vehicle. Interior All bodystyles receive an updated interior that features a new two-piece instrument panel. There is a choice of two different wood trims. Mercedes-Benz' Comand system is available, but all models will come with a 7-inch display in the center console controlled by a rotary controller. An optional Harman Kardon Logic 7 surround-sound audio system is available, as are heated and ventilated seats, power rear sunshade and a keyless start system available shortly after launch. Several packages add even more electronics, like the available Lighting Package, Parking Assist Package, Lane Tracking Package, Wood Trim Package and Driver Assistance Package. The Hands-Free Access package enables the driver to open the trunk by simply passing a foot beneath the bumper while having a key in their pocket, a first for Mercedes-Benz. Under the Hood Several powertrains are available for the E-Class. The E250 is sedan only, powered by a turbocharged 2.1-liter diesel four-cylinder (190 horsepower, but 369 pounds-feet of torque) in rear- or all-wheel drive. The E350 can be a sedan, wagon, coupe, or cabriolet and comes with a 302-horsepower, 3.5-liter, V-6 with optional all-wheel drive in the sedan and coupe and standard on the wagon. The E400 hybrid is sedan-only, and features the 3.5-liter V6 mated to a 27-hp electric motor, good for 457 pounds-feet of combined torque yet delivering 30 mpg on the highway. Top of the standard E-Class is the E550, featuring a turbocharged 5.5-liter V-8 good for 402 hp and available as a sedan, coupe or cabrio. Safety The new E-Class features an astonishing array of electronic measures aimed at surviving or even avoiding an accident. Standard on all E-Class is the new Collision Prevention Assist, an electronic system that uses sensor inputs to detect a potential collision and perform a host of functions split-seconds before the incident, such as priming the brake system, tightening the seat belt pretensioners and even braking the car autonomously of the driver. Also standard is Attention Assist, which detects driver drowsiness and alerts the driver. Optional are a range of electronic aids, including Distronic Plus with Steering Assist (lane keeping), Brake Assist with Cross-Traffic Assist, Pre-Safe Plus, Adaptive Highbeam Assist, Active Parking Assist and Surround View Camera. E63 AMG Along with revisions to the E-Class comes a new E63 AMG 4Matic sedan and wagon, the high-performance versions of the E-Class lineup. The standard E63 AMG sedan features a twin-turbo 5.5-liter V-8 engine making 550 horsepower and 531 pounds-feet of torque channeled to all four wheels by Mercedes' 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. The standard AMG sedan goes from zero to 60 in 3.6 seconds, or one can upgrade to the S-Model that features a more powerful 577-hp engine, another 59 pounds-feet of torque and can do it in 3.5 seconds. The S-Model also will be available as a wagon. All models will feature Mercedes' seven-speed automatic transmission and an electronic adjustable sport suspension. AMG-specific interior upgrades for the E63 include optional sport seats with contrasting stitching, a unique gauge cluster, silver seat belts and an Alcantara-covered steering wheel. Dash and door trim can be had in wood, piano-black lacquer or carbon fiber. An optional 14-speaker AMG Bang Olufsen audio system is available with a 1,200-watt amplifier Outside, the new E-Class front end has all-LED headlights and E63-specific gaping air openings below the bumper, now featuring what Mercedes-Benz calls its A-Wing family look. The S-Model gets some slightly different styling, including a glossy-black A-Wing, red-colored brake calipers, S-badges on the trunk and speedometer, optional carbon-ceramic brakes and unique 19-inch matte gray wheels. Available on either model will be an exterior carbon fiber styling package and an AMG-branded carbon fiber engine cover.
